It is important to know when to push yourself, when to coast, and when to rest.

Aside

I had two days off of crossfit this weekend, and when I returned yesterday I felt great. I was able to grind out 18 reps of a deadlift that only a few months ago would have been my 1RM! I’ve been working pretty hard lately and have not been feeling 100% at most WODs. Going into Friday’s WOD I was tired, sore and concerned about hurting myself. I had to take it easy rather than push myself because I was concerned about injury and I just didn’t have the mental strength. Mental endurance is an undervalued skill in Crossfit. I still performed decently, but I know I could have done much better.

It is important to know when to push yourself, when to coast, and when to rest. I’m trying to stick to a 2 on 1 off 3 on 1 off schedule as best I can, so that my body has enough time to recover and get stronger. Lately I have also read that it is beneficial to take a easy week or rest week every couple of months. I am going to try to take an easy week at the end of this month, right before the crossfit open starts.

I’m looking forward to my rowing class tonight, and then an easy rest day before I begin my heavy crossfit days.

Holiday Blubber

So I made it through the holidays, and am now almost 10 pounds heavier than before. I definitely felt it at the gym today. I’m looking forward to eating strict paleo for a while now, to get myself back to where I need to be.

On another note, I PR’d my Front Squat today at 245#. I failed on the first attempt, but after a couple minutes rest and a deep breath I was able to get back up. Can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store!

1st Crossfit Competition

So I had my first crossfit competition over the weekend. I was on a team of three. The first event was very fast paced and exciting. I was a bit disappointed to find out that the whole competition was very heavy on bar work, but Janet helped put it in perspective for me, because it played to her strengths. I suppose no competition is perfectly weighted in all directions.
On the first day of the competition one of my teammates, Pat, got very ill and could not continue. Mike, my other teammate, and I had a choice. We could continue on as individuals, or we could compete as a team of two instead of three. We chose to continue on as a team and to my surprise, we did not come in last on any event. I was very happy that we were able to finish all 5 WODs.
After the competition numerous people came down with stomach flus and colds including me. I had a three day fever of 101, and severe fatigue. I went to the doctor and he told me I had some form of mono, hopefully its not the kind that lasts months.
I cant wait to be back at the gym training!

Calm Before the Storm

Well it’s the day before my first Crossfit competition, and I’m a bit nervous. I definitely need to do more visualization of the events. It sounds as if there will be an hour or two between WODs at a minimum so I should have enough to time to rest and prepare for each. Can’t wait to feel the high of knowing I did my best. To me it’s not about winning or losing, its about giving 100%.

Sick

Thanksgiving was great, though I didn’t eat much. Came down with some sort of flu on Wednesday. I just hope that I can get better before the Crown Point crossfit competition next weekend. I want to be 100%!

Great WOD

I just had a great rowing class! rowed 11k, and Chauncey was correcting my form throughout.  My day started out pretty rough,  but it always gets better at Rowfit.

Can’t wait to get back there!

Stubborn Double Unders

I spent the better part of Strength class today working on my stubborn double unders. I just need to clear my head and relax. I know what I need to do, I just can’t seem to do it yet.

On a better note, I got a new max box jump tonight. I was watching Derek and Pat work on theirs, and I decided, why not try it. I got 41″.

Looking forward to rowing tomorrow.
